The Actor's Boutique

+ L
Fashion Merchandising major at FIT that was once a thespian.
Hi, so I am a junior and I recently have become really interested in FIT as a possible college for me. I want to become a fashion buyer and I am from California so I wouldn't be able to attend the so called "Junior Day". But what is the night life like? Is everyone friendly? Is the boy/girl ratio annoying? Do you guys socialize with other colleges in NYC. Any information would be great, have a wonderful day :)

Hey! Well, you messaged the right person because I am specializing in Buying and Planning! In fact, FIT is the only school where you can get certified in an industry-wide program called JDA for buying and planning.

Night life: everyone does their own thing. My friends and I go to late night dinners and go shopping because everything is open late on Fridays and Saturdays. It’s NYC so there is always something to do. The school even does a huge Breakfast for Dinner event at night during the year as well as movie nights every other week.

Every one here is friendly and helpful. We run one of the most fun Orientation weeks for new students to make sure you feel comfortable and get acquainted with NYC right away.

All I will say about the girl/boy ration is that the school is mostly female. We do, however, have a very diverse population of students in age, race, and whatnot, which is fantastic.

A lot of students seem to know or meet people from other schools in the Manhattan. We try our best to get involved with other schools. The Style Shop usually does a photoshoot with NYU, for example. My cousin goes to another university in Manhattan so I hang out with her a lot and have met some of her friends. I recently went to a social media conference where I met a ton of students from NYU and Fordham, which was nice.

If you want any more info about the school, I’d suggest checking out the school website, www.fitnyc.edu

» Cute Is We Aim For has a new EP

Your favorite band from middle school is back with a new EP available for download. They’ll be headlining for Allstar Weekend next week here in NYC at The Gramercy.

Guess they’re off that half-price clearance rack.

Olly Murs Wants to be a Part of it, New York, New York

British sensation Olly Murs rocked Irving Plaza in downtown NYC this past week as part of his US tour. And he couldn’t have been more excited.

The opening act was none other than Deleasa, the band which is led by Kevin Jonas’ brother-in-law. I was excited to see him perform because I had missed so many other chances in the past. He was quite good and gave off a Jason Mraz-inspired vibe.

Olly came on soon after and killed it! I had seen him back at Z100’s Jingle Ball and was impressed then. Now, I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears. Not only did Olly look great, but he sounded so smooth during every performance. I also had no idea that he had two previous albums before auditioning and being on ‘The X Factor’ the year previous to One Direction.

Besides ending the show with this two hit singles, ‘Troublemaker’ and ‘Heart Skips A Beat’, Olly performed two Stevie Wonder covers as well as some songs from his newest album, which will be released in April. My favorite song of the night was called ‘About You’ which I cannot wait to hear the studio version of.

The greatest part about this show was how every time he’d mention that the song is about a girl, everyone screamed for Caroline Flack, his ‘Xtra Factor’ co-host. The two are quite great together. He loved it so much, that he tweeted after the show about!

If you ever get a chance to see Mr. Murs perform, I highly suggest it. He is absolutely incredible!

Want a sexy time? Go see ‘The Performers’

A Friday night in NYC typically consists of mounds and mounds of out-of-towners overtaking every inch of Midtown possible. Wanting to avoid this, my friends and I thought we’d stay inside and try to see a show.

After trying the box offices of ‘Once’ and ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’, we stumbled upon a new show: ‘The Performers’. The poster caught my eye as well as the stars that are in it: Henry Winkler, Alicia Silverstone and Cheyenne Jackson.

The show is a romantic comedy about two couples, one of them being in the adult fim industry. Cheyenne Jackson is shirtless most of the time, Alicia Silverstone plays a great drunk and who doesn’t love Mr. Winkler aka The Fonz?! It’s also only 90 min. with no intermission, so it’s quick and cute all at the same time.

‘The Performers’ is still in previews, but if you can, go and get rush tickets at the box office for only $29.50. It’s a great comedy and you’ll be laughing the whole time. But, if you’re not into sexual innuendo, don’t go. You need a dirty mind to appreciate the show.

App to Download: Scout Mob

Recently, I have been discovering and Instagraming away from different restaurants and NYC dives that I’ve never been to before in my life all thanks to a little app called Scout Mob

Free for all iPhone and iPod Touch users, the app finds participating restaurants, shops and even hair salons near you and gives you a coupon to use at the location. Almost all deals are 50% off your purchase and you don’t have to spend a dime on the coupon itself like Groupon or Living Social make you do. Some of the offers will even get you free stuff! If you don’t know where the location you’re going to is, the app is provides you a map that works with the Maps app on your smartphone.

So far, my friend and I have tried to some of NYC’s best-kept secrets. Our two favorite places have been the R Lounge in the Renaissance Hotel located in the heart of Times Square and La Promenade a block away from The Highline in Chelsea. Surprisingly, the R Lounge is not tourist-filled nor over priced for that matter and La Promenade has some of the best dessert you’ll ever taste. Plus, my friend and I had a celebrity sighting there (I’m sure you’ve heard of Gaborey Sidibe. Ya know, ‘Precious’?).

I highly suggest you download this app, especially since it’s free. If you live in a major city like NYC, Dallas, LA, San Fran, you can definitely put to great use. This is like a college kids dream since we’re all about saving money for our daily Starbucks and textbooks.

In Review: ‘Fuerza Bruta’

The other night, a few friends and I trekked to Union Square to see the somewhat Cirque du Solei show called Fuerza Bruta. It was spectacular, to say the least.

The show was none like I had seen before. The audience is interactive and moves throughout the theatre space while the performers run, fly, and even swim (yes, swim) above and beyond you. You can interpret the show however you want to, but to me, I saw it as the performers trying to show a way of escaping the bad weather that comes with everyday life. The coolest part had to be when four of the female performers are swimming above you on a strong plastic-like surface. They lower it to the point where you can touch it and interact face-to-face with the swimmers.

What was the best part about this was how much of a party the space became after the show. If you decide to go to their 10:30pm showing, be prepared to get soaked. Yes, as in pouring rain inside.

After the performance, the performers came out as well as a DJ. One of the actresses positioned my friends and I into an area. We thought nothing of it until water came pouring down on us as the music started. It was the closest thing to a club I’ve ever experienced. I’m not sure how long the party lasted, but it was incredible fun. We took a picture with one of the performers, Dario Vaccaro afterwards (you can see how drenched we were).

Fuerza Bruta is playing at the Daryl Roth Theatre right by Union Square. All students should check out studentrush.org for $5 tickets!

The designer’s latest resort collection has a color palette taken from that of the famous NYC cupcake shop. This just goes to show that inspiration really does come from anywhere and everywhere.

One Direction Concert!!!!

Hello everyone!

Because I had such an amazing time at the One Direction concert, I had to make a vlog about it! It’s coming soon, but to give you a teaser about my adventure, here are some pictures!

If there are any words to describe this concert, they are Larry Stylinson.

Highlights of the concert: Niall kissed Louis’ cheek and Harry tried to pulled Niall’s pants down.

Rainy Days in the City

Rainy Days

Today was quite a rainy day in the city and inspired me to make these two outfits. One is very casual and simple while the other is a little more fashion and dressier. The first outfit is for someone who may be more about practicality and is just going around campus or class, while the other is for someone who may be going to work or is a little more of a fashionista.

One of the key pieces in this outfit post is the Burberry trench coat. Whenever it rains, I always think about having one of these coats with matching Burberry rainboots (tacky, maybe, but not for me!) It’s easy to find similar trench coats in similar colors. A friend of mine has a great Tommy Hilfiger coat that looks similar to the Burberry.

It’s supposed to rain a little bit tomorrow so gear up! I heard it even snowed in some parts of New York.

The City Bakery’s Hot Chocolate Festival!

Every February, The City Bakery has its annual Hot Chocolate Festival. The whole month, everyday, a new and intriguing flavor of hot chocolate is served. Just by going to their website, you can see what the flavor of the day is.

Today, I was very enticed when I saw that it was Darkest Dark Hot Chocolate. Being a huge fan of dark chocolate and wanting to try The City Bakery since last year, I decided to go in since I was down in Flatiron. The equivalent to a tall at Starbucks, I paid $5 and was on my way. As soon as i sipped my chocolatey goodness, I was in heaven. This drink tasted like I was drinking a candy bar. It was so good, but I can only take so much sugar.

I would suggest going to The City Bakery to try their different drinks and desserts. The bakery is one of NYC’s highly regarded.
